Interview Metadata – China's Green Soft Power (China, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, US)

This database compiles structured metadata from interviews conducted between 2022 and 2024 as part of a qualitative research project examining China's use of environmental diplomacy as a soft power instrument, particularly within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The dataset includes entries from 87 semi-structured interviews with policy experts, civil society representatives, academics, and institutional stakeholders based in Asia, Europe, and the United States. Each entry contains metadata such as: Interview date and location Affiliation and role of the interviewee (anonymised where appropriate) Thematic focus (e.g., green BRI, civil society, governance, environmental impact, soft power) Summary of key points raised Geographical focus of the discussion Observations on transparency, sustainability, and local agency A central focus of the project is how China's green soft power—projected through environmental diplomacy, green finance, and climate commitments—is being used to enhance China’s global image and legitimacy. The data provides insight into how these strategies are perceived and received in various national contexts, and how they interact with issues of governance, legitimacy, and influence. The database supports analytical exploration of how China’s environmental diplomacy intersects with governance norms, local accountability, and strategic partnerships across BRI regions. It also reflects divergent perspectives on the credibility of China’s green transition commitments abroad and the broader implications for sustainable development.
