The black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) is a model species for understanding sexual selection. We scaffolded the black grouse genome to allow genetic and genomic studies of this classic lekking system. The goals of this project are to understand the genetic architecture of inbreeding depression, epigenetic mechanisms of sexual trait expression, and the relationship between genetic load and fitness, among others. Although black grouse are not threatened, they are locally declining. Therefore, understanding how the increased risk of inbreeding affects individual fitness and ultimately, population viability is key to protecting this species. Moreover, the implications of these studies will increase the broader understanding of inbreeding depression and genetic load dynamics in natural populations.
