Butanol's unique fuel characteristics and the possibility of microbial production make it the most desirable eco-friendly substitute for petroleum fuels. However, the highly toxic nature of 1-butanol makes it unsuitable for commercial production. By comparison, 2-butanol has similar fuel qualities but is supposedly less toxic.
