The Tymbal of a Cicada: Nature’s Sound Generating Metastructure

This dataset accompanies the manuscript “The Tymbal of a Cicada: Nature’s Sound-Generating Metastructure” and compiles species-level call metadata and acoustic summary measures for 60 cicada recordings. Each row provides the Species (binomial; 60 unique), Family (Cicadidae), Genus/suborder (16 unique labels), a link to the Audio Source (public repositories/archives), Call type annotation (trill, chirp, chirp/trill, trill/chirp), and the Peak Frequency (Hz) of the dominant spectral component (range: 893.6–18,281.7 Hz). A Power Spectral Density column is included as a placeholder in this sheet (no values); full figure-level raw data and code used to compute spectra are provided in the article’s Source Data and code package. This table underpins the cross-species comparisons and reproducibility of the acoustic analyses, and it is intended for reuse in bioacoustics, biomechanics, and comparative biology (e.g., benchmarking morphology-to-acoustics prediction tasks or curating reference call libraries).
