Arranging the deck chairs: From painting to architecture and back again

Background: This was an installation explaining design development ideas in an architectural project. The ideas brought forward connect everyday architectural elements to fundamental concepts of contemporary painting, showing how architecture and painting can be brought together in a single project. The installation drew reference to contemporary French painter Daniel Buren whose work is explicitly referenced and extended in both the architectural project and the installation. The bringing together of architecture and painting has been an enduring intellectual issue throughout the 20th century from the de Stijl movement to Sol Le Witt, including Daniel Buren, and beyond. Research Aims: The aim of the project was to collapse the logic of architecture and the logic of painting. Results: Painting and architecture cannot be separated in the resulting project, it can be experienced using both terms of reference, and this was a central idea in the Brussels installation. Research Significance: The project itself was selected by the Melbourne Art Fair for inclusion in their 'collectors tour', and has had positive reviews in several architectural publications including Architecture Review Asia Pacific and Urbis magazine.
