RuneS Font

The RuneS-Font is a non-Unicode font comprising runic graph types, which were developed as part of the graphetic and graphtypological research conducted by the long-term project "Runic Writing in the Germanic languages", funded by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony. The graph types represented in the font are graphic abstractions based on distinctive formal features of the runic graphs as attested in the inscriptions in the older Futhark, the younger Futhark (with a focus on the Viking Age inscriptions from Denmark and Norway, and the medieval manuscript runes), as well as the Old-English Futhorc. The classification system for the graph types is built on the following distinctive parameters: the number and type of the graphic elements (stave, twig, hook or dot), the course of the elements (vertical, horizontal, ascending or descending), the relation of the elements (left, right, top, bottom, crossing), and their points of intersection (based on a 3-zone line grid). For the visualisation of the types, angular shapes were used as the basis for the font.
