The standardised hospitalisation rate (TOS), with the direct method, is a weighted average of the specific hospitalisation rates by gender and by age at which the weighting coefficients are obtained from a type population chosen as a reference (standard). The typical population used is the Italian one as of 01/01/2012. The standardized hospitalization rate serves to eliminate the effect of the different gender and age composition of the populations on which it is calculated, thus making it possible to compare rates referring to different populations.
