Earthquake risk assessments of faults often overlook the influence of intermediate principal stress on faults. However, recent studies have shown that intermediate principal stress can alter the internal friction angle, which in turn affects the friction coefficient and strength of rocks. In this study, we conducted slip experiments on granitic faults to investigate the effect of intermediate principal stress (5MPa, 10MPa, 15MPa, 20MPa, 25MPa) on the maximum static friction coefficient. Meanwhile, direct shear tests with varying intermediate principal stress also have been conducted. The DEM method have been used to simulate the the contact properties of fault planes under different intermediate principal stress.
