There are three environmental metatranscriptome data sets that were collected using in situ sample collection and preservation, and one sample collected using Niskin bottles. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of in situ filtration and preservation, and the reproducibility of the snapshots of community gene expression that one obtains using this approach. We evaluated reproducibility by examining 3 replicate ~2L water samples prepared using in situ approaches, and compared these results with a single 30L Niskin bottle sample.
