WGS of CTX-M-encoding bacteria from imported seafood

We determined the frequency, genotypes, phenotypes, and mobility of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-encoding genes in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from retail seafood products. Approximately one in thirteen seafood products and one in six shrimp samples were contaminated with Enterobacteriaceae carrying CTX-M enzymes of high clinical relevance. Nearly half of the isolates mobilized blaCTX-M to E. coli under laboratory conditions. These findings underscore the need for ESBL surveillance on traded seafood, especially shrimps, alongside quantitative risk assessment studies aimed at evaluating the potential health risks for consumers who are exposed to these bacteria via consumption of raw seafood.
