The van der Waals (vdW) materials family consists of semiconductors, superconductors, ferroelectrics, and more recently, magnets. An exfoliable vdW material possessing multiple properties at once would enable atomically thin multifunctional devices. Here, we propose to characterize antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders in the recently-synthesized multiferroic vdW material NiI2.
