New haplotypes of <i>Zaprionus tuberculatus</i> and <i>Zaprionus indianus</i> (Diptera: Drosophilidae) identified in fig orchards in Algeria

Fig trees provide a micro-habitat for various fruit pests, causing significant crop losses. Algeria is among the world’s leading producers of figs. To study the Drosophilidae species associated with fig orchards near Algiers, a total of 190 drosophilid flies were collected and identified through morphological analysis, confirmed by DNA barcoding. Two species were documented: <i>Zaprionus tuberculatus</i> Malloch, 1932, and <i>Zaprionus indianus</i> Gupta, 1970. Pairwise alignment of the obtained COII sequences with global <i>Zaprionus</i> spp. references revealed 65 haplotypes, including two new Algerian haplotypes (H64 and H65). This study marks the first record of <i>Zaprionus tuberculatus</i> in Algeria and confirms the presence of <i>Zaprionus indianus</i> in Algerian fig orchards.
