Metal nanoparticles can capture light and focus its energy into tiny spaces. Combining two metals together in these nanoparticles often leads to enhanced performance, but the way the two metals interact can vary greatly. This thesis examines two structures of silver (Ag) and platinum (Pt) in detail, and the behaviour of each is probed at the nanoscale. Comparing the two structures against one another reveals that small changes in how the metals are combined alter the ability of the particles to interact with light.
