The morphological variation among these species suggests that this may not be the case, and that the species most closely related to the type species of Goniocotes are even fewer than listed here. 2 Kolencik et al. (2022) showed that Philopterus, as currently interpreted, comprises at least two clades well separated genetically, suggesting that this genus may also need further subdivision. 3 Penenirmus may also need further subdivision (Johnson et al. 2021). 4 Quadraceps is included here, as preliminary data suggest that only a few of species are closely related to the type species, and that several other genera are nested within Quadraceps as currently interpreted.
