Completion of Mochovce NPP Units 3 and 4

As part of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the completion of reactors 3 and 4 of the Mochovce nuclear power plant, the Austrian Ecology Institute, together with the consultants Helmut Hirsch and Oda Becker, was commissioned by the Federal Environment Agency – on behalf of the Ministry of Life – to prepare a technical opinion on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIA). This technical opinion contains, inter alia, a list of 13 questions that need to be clarified in order to be able to assess possible transboundary environmental impacts. A public hearing was held in Vienna on 25 October 2009 as part of the cross-border EIA. Bilateral consultations followed on 24 and 25 November 2009. The Austrian delegation headed by the Ministry of Life included the authors of this statement as well as representatives of the Federal Environment Agency and the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and Salzburg. On the Slovak side, representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ÚJD) and the consensus promoter, Slovenské elektrárne a.s. (SE), supported by technical consultants (VUJE), participated under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment (MZP).
