The safety of anthraquinone laxatives has been controversial. Sennoside A is one of the representative components of anthraquinone laxatives. We focused on the key role of gut microbes in the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier to elucidate whether sennoside A could disrupt the integrity of the colonic epithelial barrier and promote the development of colitis and colon cancer.
