The IAU Minor Planet Center is the only official organization worldwide responsible for receiving and distributing positional measurements of asteroids, comets, and irregular moons orbiting beyond the major planets. This center undertakes the identification, naming and orbital computation of these celestial objects, maintains the observational and orbital master files, and disseminates discovery information globally via electronic circulars and its official website. Operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, the Minor Planet Center is affiliated with Division F of the International Astronomical Union, and its funding primarily comes from NASA's Near-Earth Object Observations program.
