Template volumes were 2 µl for the experiments given in figures 2–7. Following establishment of the standard curve all templates comprised 100 ng of gDNA or cDNA. Both the 10X Reddymix Buffer and the Thermoprime Plus taq polymerase were sourced from Thermo Scientific (Abgene UK, Surrey, UK). All primers were synthesised by Sigma-Aldrich Ltd. (Dorset, UK).
