Sequence data for 34 specimens of modern Asian newt

Liver and muscle samples were preserved in 99% ethanol and stored at the Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, and the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A total of 34 specimens from 23 species were analyzed.Full genomic DNA was extracted using a QIAGEN DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit (Valencia, CA, USA). Two mitochondrial fragments (16S rRNA and ND2) and two nuclear fragments (POMC and SACS) were amplified. All sequences were read using a 3130 Genetic Analyzer (Applied Biosystems) .
