This thesis focused on the biomimicry and use of bioderived materials for fibre production and fibre coatings towards the sustainable development of textiles in fast fashion and medical textiles. The production of gelatin fibres is demonstrated at room temperature with a green solvent system with no detriment to mechanical performance. A cellulose derived coating is applied to the gelatin fibres and engineered to improve adhesion. Chemical synthesis and crosslinking methods have been optimised to synthesise peptides that mimic the elastomeric protein resilin. Future work required to successfully polymerise these peptides, before they can be spun into fibres, is highlighted.
