Replication Data for: Delivering Public Services via Faith-Based Organizations: Experimental Evidence for Theory and Practice

Replication Data for the Following Study: Faith-based nonprofits are frequently used to deliver public programs in health care, disaster relief, refugee resettlement, criminal justice, social services and a wide variety of other areas but have been understudied in public administration. Using the logic of principal-agent models, this paper illustrates potential concerns with faith-based implementation of public programs in terms of public responses. It then develops a theory linking these concerns to existing public values’ conflicts involving coercion, proselytizing, policy-value conflict and deservingness and provides a preliminary test of the theory using a preregistered survey experiment of US adult residents across eight policy areas. The results show significant resistance to faith-based implementation based on these value conflicts and links them to underlying concerns about inequality in service delivery.
