Bike Comfort Index

The Bike Comfort Index is a polyline feature layer maintained by Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services. It contains approximately 6,700 street and trail segments, each scored according to a bicycle comfort index methodology designed to assess the relative comfort and suitability of facilities for bicycling. The index incorporates numerous attributes related to roadway design, traffic conditions, bicycle infrastructure, trail characteristics, land use context, and terrain. Examples of evaluated factors include traffic volume, speed limits, lane counts, parking conditions, slope, protected bicycle facilities, traffic controls, and trail characteristics. The resulting scores help identify comfortable bicycle routes, evaluate network gaps, prioritize improvements, and support transportation planning and active mobility initiatives throughout Arlington County.
