VPRS 12064 Reports of Still-Births by District

By 1853, the Registrar General's Department was responsible for the administration of the compulsory registration of births, deaths, and marriages as determined by the Births, Deaths and Marriages Act 16 Vic., No.26.The Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Amendment) Act in 1952 provided for the registration of stillbirths. Prior to this Act however, Stillbirths were recorded neither as births or deaths by the District Registrar.This series was created to comply with the Registrar's obligation to maintain a record of stillbirths for statistical purposes. It contains details of the date and locality of the stillbirth, details of the parents, period of intra-uterine gestation, legitimacy of birth, and by whom the stillbirth was recorded.Each district maintained its own separate record of stillbirths. However they have been registered together in one series for ease of reference.Related series created after the proclamation of the Act in 1952 include VPRS 11768 Name Index to Still Birth Registers and VPRS 11769 Still Birth Registers.There is only one volume which is dates from 1863, whilst the majority begin registering stillbirths from the early 20th century.1853年起，户籍总署（Registrar General's Department）依据《16 Vic.第26号出生、死亡及婚姻登记法》，负责出生、死亡与婚姻的强制登记管理工作。1952年颁布的《出生、死亡及婚姻登记（修订）法》新增了死胎登记条款，但在此法案实施前，地区登记官既未将死胎登记为出生，也未将其登记为死亡。本系列档案正是为履行登记官维护死胎统计记录的法定义务而设立，包含死胎发生日期、发生地点、父母信息、宫内妊娠时长、出生合法性，以及死胎登记人等详细信息。各地区原本均留存有各自独立的死胎登记记录，但为便于查阅，所有地区的死胎登记记录被整合为单一统一系列。1952年该法案颁布后衍生的相关档案系列包括VPRS 11768《死胎登记姓名索引》与VPRS 11769《死胎登记册》。该系列中仅有一册档案的记录可追溯至1863年，其余绝大多数档案的死胎登记工作均始于20世纪初期。
