High energy irradiation and mass loss on the super earth GJ 1214b

We propose to observe the transiting superearth system GJ 1214 for 25 ks withXMMNewton. GJ 1214 is located 13 pc from Earth and shows the deepestvisualband transit of all close superearths. The system is a suitable targetfor observations and, thus, a testcase for planetary and atmospheric modeling.The proposed observation will allow us to characterize the Xray and UV emissionof the host star, estimate the massloss rate and history of the planet,constrain models of GJ 1214b s atmosphere, and, finally, prepare the ground formore intensive followup studies. truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
