Using the heat pump, the Stirling motor and the quantum cascade laser as examples, the report examines which factors were decisive for technological leaps in the development of these eco-innovations and how much time the developments took. In addition to a mature technology, other factors are also relevant for the market penetration of eco-innovations. In particular, legal framework conditions trigger technological leaps in eco-innovations that take into account the need for resource savings, climate and environmental protection. Better products or lower costs also lead to higher penetration levels. Research is not only a prerequisite for innovation, but is also seen as a service for the entire eco-innovation process.
