A corpus-based of near synonym: trip, journey, and voyage

The purpose of this corpus-based study is to improve comprehension of the contextual usage of the near-synonyms "trip," "journey," and "voyage" by examining the subtle differences between them. This study examines at the frequencies, distribution patterns, and collocational behaviors of these terms by comparing definitions and uses from the Oxford Advanced Learners' Dictionary (OALD) and the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE) and analyzing data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The procedure entails gathering information on the distribution and frequency of the target synonyms in eight different genres: academic, spoken, fiction, magazines, newspapers, website, blogs, and TV/movie subtitles. This includes examining the Mutual Information (MI) scores to determine common collocates. The results show that, whereas these words are frequently regarded as interchangeable, they have significant preferences in different genres and circumstances. "Trip" is primarily employed in informal and ordinary circumstances, but "journey" and "voyage" are more commonly used in formal and literary literature. The study identifies the specific verb and adjective collocates associated with each phrase, emphasizing their distinct semantic and pragmatic features. This study contributes to the field of applied linguistics by providing a thorough examination of the minor distinctions between near-synonyms, with practical implications for English language learners and educators seeking to optimize word choice for effective communication.
