Alessi Mutants

BACKGROUND Alessi Mutants 2016 The Alessi Mutants Exhibition explores the relationship between architecture and industrial objects, emphasising small-scale furniture and object studies. It is an exposition and interpretation of the culmination of six years of research undertaken through Alessi Mutants Workshops. CONTRIBUTION The exhibition showcases objects which serve as the conceptual origin for the unfolding of shapes and surfaces that generate micro-environments that by hybridisation are removed from any initial typology or utilitarian determination of the works. The curatorial positioning of these objects offers a unique architectural investigation of Alessi typology, in parallel with scaleable forms and fabrication techniques. The Exhibition redefines the notion of designed objects by warping, pulling and pushing the boundaries of these objects until they arrive at new propositions of formal production and techniques, thus informing the contemporary discourse on generative design processes and manufacture. SIGNIFICANCE Its revelation is by way of the Wanted Design Exhibition, a prestigious international platform, showcasing innovative design at New York Design Week, and the development of a mobile-optimised data responsive web app providing accessibility to a broad range of users across a range of devices. The web app features a digital archive to produce a dynamic, interactive engagement with the exhibition. An accompanying book with critical essays will add further layers of interpretation of Alessi Mutants.
