The Fainter Late-Type WTTS Population in the Sco-Cen Star Formation Region

GTWe propose a deep EPIC observation of the nearby SFR Upper ScoCen wheremediumdeep pointed ROSAT observations (Sciortino et al. 1998) have shown thatthe shallow limiting sensitivity either of Einstein and RASS data prevents thesufficient sampling of the lowest mass and Xray fainter stars strongly biasingthe estimate of the IMF. The proposed XMM observation will allow us to detectessentially all of the Xray emitting population and to derive a reliable IMF atlow mass end. For all the known stars in the field of view we will also obtainEPIC spectra of quality better than any PMS ASCA, and even ACIS, spectra withthe same exposure time. This will allow us to constrain the physical conditionsin PMS coronae and to compare them with those of other coeval stellar samples. truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
