HCOV_0100, thickness of Quartaire Aquifer systems

Flanders is composed of an alternation of aquifers (sand, gravel, chalk, rock, etc.) and regionally occurring non-aquifers (e.g. clay). The sequence of these aquifers and aquitards has its own coding in Flanders: hydrogeological Coding of the Subsoil of Flanders (HCOV coding). The HCOV coding is composed of main hydrogeological units, sub-units and basic units. The main unit brings together a sequence of geological layers which have broadly the same hydrogeological characteristics, forming a single unit. hcov_0100_thickness (Quartaire Aquifer systems) forms the collection of all hydrogeological water-bearing systems of Quartarian origin, with the exception of some Quartarian deposits in the Kempen. These are isolated, highly fragmented and heterogeneous aquifers formed by the Quartarian tope. It is a bundle of various hydrogeologically independent water-bearing systems, usually of limited size. This main unit is rather an administrative unit. The dataset “hcov_0100_thickness, thickness of Quartaire Aquifer systems” represents the thickness of this hydrogeological layer in a grid per grid cell.
