Analysing the pedagogical benefits of virtual reality in Middle and Secondary Schools: A focused study

Virtual Reality (VR) is increasingly being integrated into middle and secondary school education, offering immersive and interactive learning experiences. This focused study explores the pedagogical benefits of VR as a digital learning tool, examining its affordances, challenges, and its impact on student engagement and knowledge retention. Drawing on classroom observations and narrative interviews with educators, the research highlights VR’s potential to enhance student motivation, facilitate experiential learning, and support diverse educational needs. It also identifies key challenges, including curriculum integration, teacher training, logistical constraints, and student distractions. The findings underscore the importance of structured curriculum mapping, ongoing professional development, and institutional support to ensure effective implementation. By providing context-specific insights and practical recommendations from the participant teachers as well as from the literature, this research contributes to the academic discourse on immersive technologies in education and offers guidance for educators and policymakers aiming to leverage VR to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
