MK 362: Field recording of music in Ndona, Ende, Nusa Tenggara Timur (Flores)

Recordings made in Desa Ndona, in the mountains just outside Ende on the island of Flores, Indonesia. Saturday, 6th January 1990. CASSETTE 362, Side A: 1. Tari Ine Pare: dance to welcome guests. Xylophone/nggo dhengi; 2+2+1 kettle gongs/nggo loeo. Drum/Lamba. (oe=umlaut) 2. Tari Mbira (=elang, eagle). Lamba, nggo loeo. 3. Musik Suling - ten sideblown flutes playing in 3rds plus a rebana/alabana. 4. Tari Poteu, usually performed at the Pire Teu ceremony to catch rats in preparation for a successful harvest. 2 bhoku peri (bamboo percussion tubes), lamba (drum), and 2 nggo nggeri (bamboo kecapis [zithers] beaten with bamboo sticks), nggo loeo (kettle gongs). Side B: Tari Gawi (meaning tandak/sign) 5. Tari Woge – celebratory dance after a battle 6. Tari Fekobu – a social dance 7. Musik Nggo Dhengi – solo xylophone 8. Nggo-lamba ensemble comprising a xylophone, kettle gongs and drum 9. Tari Gawi- a social dance after a battle. All villagers joined hands and danced in a circle around the ancestral stones in the village square. The atasodha - pantun singing leader - stands in the centre. The dancing went for several hours
