Jurisdiction: Sewage disposal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Applicability: Projects that generate sanitary waste must dispose of it to municipal sewer systems or in compliance with Title 5 of the State Environmental Code. Regulatory The purpose of the State Environmental Code is to protect public health and environmental resources by regulating the discharge of sewage. Septic systems generating less than 10,000 gallons per day are regulated by local Boards of Health. Larger systems must be reviewed and approved by the Department of Environmental Protection.
