This dataset contains detailed vehicle count data collected at the exit of Van Loo Street in Aix-en-Provence, France, from September 25 to 30, 2023. It was developed to provide an overview of the traffic conditions in this area via quantitative data, to support evidence-based future regional planning efforts such as reducing traffic volume, prioritizing specific vehicle types, or pedestrianizing certain streets. The dataset was voluntarily collected by community volunteers without compensation, with each day's data collection lasting approximately 12 hours. Each row in the dataset records vehicle counts observed at the intersection of Van Loo Street and Boulevard Sextius, categorized by vehicle type (including two-wheelers, artisan delivery vehicles, trucks (less than 3.5 tons and greater than 3.5 tons), technical service vehicles, local light-duty vehicles, and light-duty vehicles from other regions or countries) and travel direction (such as haut sextius, cordeliers, cardeurs, thermes, bas sextius), with each entry covering a 2-hour time span. The data collection was conducted manually on a case-by-case basis without the aid of computer tools, completed by three volunteers daily from 6:30 to 18:30 between September 25 and 30, 2023, and extended to 20:30 on September 29. Preprocessing steps included digitizing the paper count sheets, and the data was entered into the database by students during an educational course on October 2, 2023. The dataset is publicly distributed on data.gouv.fr under the ODbL license, with no plans for future updates. The data reflects the current local traffic situation, with minimal variation except during school holidays. The data is aggregated and cannot be traced back to individuals, complying with legal and ethical requirements.
