Air pollution is a significant environmental issue today. Industrial development has led to a rapid increase in the use of motor vehicles. Consequently, air quality is declining. Air pollution is primarily caused by the presence of foreign substances in the air. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, "Air pollution is the presence in the surrounding atmosphere of substances, usually as a result of human activity, in sufficient quantities, for sufficient duration, and under such conditions as to interfere with the comfort, health, or well-being of people or with the enjoyment of property." According to the American Medical Association, "Air pollution is an excessive concentration of foreign substances in the air that adversely affects human health and causes property damage."
