Data-Gouv-FR/ips-lycees-a-partir-de-2023
This dataset, titled Indices de position sociale des lycées (à partir de 2023), focuses on the social position indices of French high schools starting from 2023. The Social Position Index (IPS) quantifies students social background based on the socio-professional categories (PCS) of their parents, with higher values indicating more advantaged social origins and lower values indicating more disadvantaged ones. The IPS is calculated using a statistical method that synthesizes socio-economic and cultural attributes related to academic success. The dataset includes annual IPS data for each high school, with each row representing a school for a given academic year. IPS is only recorded if calculated for at least 5 students. It also includes the social heterogeneity index (standard deviation of IPS) for schools, measuring diversity in social profiles. From 2022, the IPS calculation methodology was updated, causing a break in the series, and students without both parents PCS are excluded. From 2025-2026, the dataset expands to include French overseas territories (e.g., French Polynesia, New Caledonia). It is useful for analyzing educational inequalities, school social composition, and for policy and academic research. Caution is advised in interpreting small differences in average IPS (e.g., less than 3 points) and fluctuations in private schools due to changes in PCS reporting in 2023.
