Radon is a radioactive gas produced by the natural decay of uranium in rocks. As a lung carcinogen, it can pose a health risk when it accumulates in buildings. By analyzing geological characteristics, areas where radon concentrations in buildings are likely to be high can be identified. This dataset, compiled by ASNR (the French National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management), provides a radon potential map covering all of metropolitan France, categorizing municipalities into three classes: Class 1 (located on geological formations with the lowest uranium content, such as limestone, sandstone, and clay, where radon concentrations are generally low); Class 2 (located on formations with low uranium content but where specific geological factors, such as faults or underground mines, may facilitate radon transfer to buildings); Class 3 (located on geological formations with higher uranium content, such as granite, certain volcanic rocks, sandstone, and black shale, where the risk of high radon concentrations is greater). The dataset is based on results from a national measurement campaign, showing the proportion of buildings exceeding specific radon concentration thresholds in each class. Additionally, for larger municipalities (e.g., overseas territories), the dataset may only reflect localized risks, so it is recommended to refer to more detailed geological formation maps for accurate risk assessment.
