The Social Position Index (IPS) assesses students social status based on the professions and social categories (PCS) of their parents. Each PCS or PCS pair is associated with a numerical IPS value, which serves as a quantitative summary of socio-economic and cultural attributes linked to academic success. A higher IPS indicates a more advantaged social background on average, while a lower IPS indicates a more disadvantaged background. The reference values for IPS are determined using statistical methods that synthesize characteristics describing students living conditions (see Rocher, 2016). The initial version (used until 2021) was calculated from DEPP panel data of students entering sixth grade in 2007; starting in 2022, it was updated using DEPP panel data of students entering CP in 2011, leading to a series break. The social level of a school is evaluated by calculating the average IPS of its students, but IPS is a simplified indicator and cannot fully capture the socio-economic and cultural complexity. Based on PCS reported by families and recorded by schools, IPS has a margin of error; differences of 3 points or less in average IPS should not be overinterpreted. The social heterogeneity index is the standard deviation of students IPS, with higher values indicating more diverse social backgrounds; calculated since 2019 for secondary schools only, and from 2022, students with unrecorded parental PCS are excluded. The dataset covers EREA under French National Education supervision (public and contract private schools), providing average IPS and standard deviation per school per year, with IPS not recorded if based on fewer than 5 students.
