Agricultural water dependency indicators for Azerbaijan

This dataset provides agricultural water dependency indicators for Azerbaijan. It was prepared for the research project “Satellite-based assessment of water level variability and economic exposure in Azerbaijan’s Caspian Sea and strategic inland water systems.” The dataset combines regional agricultural production indicators, regional water-use indicators, and national water dependency context indicators. The regional part of the dataset covers administrative units of Azerbaijan for 2024 and includes crop production indicators such as cereal and dried pulses, wheat, barley, cotton, vegetables, potatoes, watermelons and melons, fruits and berries, and grapes. The water-use component includes water abstracted from natural water resources, water consumption, water loss, and water used for irrigation and agriculture. These indicators were compiled from official statistical exports of the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The dataset also includes national context indicators related to SDG 6.4.1, SDG 6.4.2, and the World Bank / FAO AQUASTAT indicator on annual freshwater withdrawals for agriculture as a percentage of total freshwater withdrawal. These indicators provide broader national context on water-use efficiency, water stress, and agricultural freshwater dependency. The dataset includes an author-calculated agricultural water dependency index based on normalized regional agricultural production and water-use indicators. The index is intended for comparative research purposes and should not be interpreted as an official classification of regional water risk. The dataset package includes CSV and XLSX files, raw statistical exports, national context indicators, a data dictionary, methodology notes, metadata, source links, citation information, and documentation files to support transparency, reproducibility, and reuse.
