The RuneS-DB is an online database which provides comprehensive data on runic objects and texts from the beginnings of runic writing in Europe, some time around the first century AD, and up until the post-Reformation period. It encompasses information on runic epigraphy known to date from Scandinavia, Germany, Great-Britain and the Netherlands, as well as other areas of Western and Eastern Europe, and also on runic entries in medievel and post-Reformation manuscripts (so-called manuscript runes or Runica Manuscripta). The database was developed as part of the research programme of the long-term project "Runic Writing in the Germanic languages" and funded by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony. The data sets comprise a comprehensive array of information on the artefact, including the year of discovery and the findspot (with regional and national classification, as well as GIS-data) together with a general categorization of the find context. Further data include the present location of the object resp. its place of storage (with GND specification, inventory number and links to related websites) as well as information on its state of preservation. The object (with measurements) and its material are described and classified, each according to a hierarchical classification system, and tagged with the standardized vocabulary of the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus. Information on the runic text cover a transliteration of the text in Latin letters together with a specification of the rune-row used in the inscription, a German and English translation, and a general classification of the category of the inscription. Links to Scandinavian and English online platforms are provided for further information. If available, each object and inscription is illustrated by one or several images. The images are accompanied by a short description, information regarding image rights, the source of the images, and the owner of the rights.
