<b>FIG S1 </b><b>Thiocyanate does not affect the minimal inhibitory concentration of nickel for </b><b><i>Escherichia coli</i></b><b>. </b><i>E. coli</i> strain MG1655 was grown overnight at 37°C with shaking in MOPS minimal medium containing 0.2% glucose, then normalized to A<sub>600</sub> = 1 and rinsed twice with sterile MOPS minimal medium containing 0.2% glucose but lacking micronutrients. The resulting cell suspensions were diluted 1:40 into MOPS minimal media containing 0.2% glucose without micronutrients, supplemented with the indicated concentrations of NiSO<sub>4</sub> and/or NaSCN. Growth curves were performed in clear 96-well plates in a Tecan Spark plate reader, incubating at 37°C with shaking and measuring A<sub>600</sub> at 30-minute intervals for 22 hours (n=3 experimental replicates, with 1-3 technical replicates per experiment; error bars of one standard deviation). Dashed lines indicate A<sub>600</sub> = 0.1 and t = 18 h.
