Support Conservation Decisions with GIS Instructor Materials

In this module, learners apply a conservation lens to spatial thinking, taking on a case study of whooping cranes in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas, USA. In the problem-based lab, learners run a suitability analysis to choose a location for a hypothetical new protected area. The module asks students to (1) integrate data from multiple sources, (2) assess data for quality, uncertainty, or bias, and (3) analyze and communicate the spatial distribution of data. Students will learn several analysis tools in ArcGIS Online including Summarize Center and Dispersion, Kernel Density, Weighted Sum, Create Buffers, Overlay Layers, Feature to Raster, Clip, Distance Accumulation, and Remap. Links to the datasets used in the module are included in this Instructor Guide if instructors wish to have students apply these methods to another study area using the same data. Technical Requirements: This module uses ArcGIS Online and requires the student to have an ArcGIS account.
