Unlock Digital Cartography Instructor Materials

This module introduces students to the representation of spatial data with maps and the basics of cartography. Learners will learn (1) to communicate spatial information through maps, (2) identify and use different types of symbols and styling, and (3) apply cartographic principles to various case studies. Learners will apply these skills by creating a web map using ArcGIS Online. Learners will design a visual hierarchy and style thematic data, customize a basemap to increase visual impact, and create pop-ups in a dynamic web map. The ethical lesson of this module builds on information from the book How to Lie with Maps¹. During this lesson, students will learn how cartography can be used to influence a narrative or alter the perceptions of a viewer. Technical Requirements: This module uses ArcGIS Online and requires the student to have an ArcGIS account.
